The History of the Bengal Breed

The Bengal breed was originally developed by crossing the Asian leopard cat with domestic cats. The goal of this early breeding work was to create a domestic cat that carried the beautiful wild appearance of the Asian leopard cat while maintaining a friendly and manageable temperament.

Another motivation behind the development of the breed was the hope of creating cats that might show resistance to feline leukemia through hybrid genetics.

Over time, selective breeding helped establish the Bengal as a recognized domestic breed while maintaining the distinctive spotted patterns and athletic build that make them so recognizable today.

Modern Bengals are several generations removed from their wild ancestors and are fully domestic cats with loving and interactive personalities.

Our Bengal Story

My interest in Bengals began about five years ago after reading an article describing how the breed was originally developed. Having previously lost my first Siamese cat to feline leukemia, the idea of a breed that had been developed with that disease in mind really stood out to me.

I had always loved cats for as long as I can remember, but the idea of owning a cat that carried the beauty of a wild feline was fascinating.

When I brought home my first Bengal, Luna, she immediately stole my heart. She was fearless, confident, and incredibly intelligent. Luna quickly became my best friend and soul mate. The bond we shared left a lasting impact on my life, and I will always remember the love she gave me.

It was because of Luna that I decided to begin working with the Bengal breed.

Personality and Temperament

Bengal cats are loyal, confident, and highly intelligent. They form strong bonds with their families and enjoy interacting with people.

Like Siamese cats, many people describe Bengals as having dog-like personalities. They often greet their owners at the door when they come home and enjoy interactive games such as fetch.

Bengals are curious and love exploring their surroundings. Their intelligence makes them highly trainable, and they thrive in homes where they receive attention, stimulation, and playtime.

Despite their energetic reputation, Bengals raised at Supreme Cattery are not significantly more active than our other breeds. All kittens are naturally playful during kittenhood, but as Bengals mature into adults, their energy levels become more balanced.

Activity and Enrichment

Bengal kittens benefit greatly from early enrichment and stimulation. Providing toys, climbing spaces, and interactive play helps them develop into confident and well-adjusted adult cats.

Because of their playful nature, many Bengal kittens do well when raised with a littermate or another young cat. Growing up with a companion allows them to play and burn energy together.

However, Bengals can also adapt well to homes that already have an older resident cat. In many cases, adult cats adjust well to the presence of a kitten.

Important Considerations

Early spaying and neutering is important for Bengals, as it helps prevent behavioral issues such as inappropriate elimination outside the litter box.

Like all cats, Bengals can be sensitive to sudden changes in their environment. Maintaining a stable routine and providing proper enrichment helps them feel secure and comfortable in their home.

While Bengals sometimes have a reputation for being extremely wild or hyperactive, this is often misunderstood. With proper socialization and enrichment, they are affectionate, intelligent companions that enjoy interacting with their families.
